Hey guys,

Is 2" too small to bother with for a cat back exhaust on a 1UZ soarer? Reason I ask is my step brother has a pipe bender and even his 90 degree bends are incredibly good on this bender, completely smooth and almost no change diameter compared to many I have seen. I might see if I can just find a 2.25" die to use and make a mild steel exhaust system up. That said when a die is referred to as to would be the exterior diameter right? so for a 2.25 internal I would need a die that is that + double the wall thickness?

My step brother has access to a tone of cheap mild steel piping of many sizes and thicknesses so may as well do the exhaust as a before uni starts project.

"just Finding" dies I think will be your challenge.

Part of my inventory of hydraulic equipment I sell is benders. Ok they are for bending hydraulic tubing but still only a hand bender and a 3/4" (19.05mm) die runs about $600-, the bender is around $3800- though. The medium mandrel bender might be more in your range, with 2.5" (OD) dies would set you back around $55000- , plus shipping of course.

Haha the price range of this one wasn't quite that high :P just a tad below 55k. I will check the place he got it from to see if they sell dies in other sizes as it has 1/2" 1" 1 1/2" 2" at the moment.

Im guessing 2" OD is way too small for a decent dual exhaust on a 1UZ? hopefully I can find a 2.25 or 2.5 OD around somewhere.

As a more serious comparison, I was quoted as 2.25 being optimum for a 2.6 4cyl. but I don't think you need to enlarge it 1:1 (imagine the exhaust on a 7lt chev!) I used to run 1.75/2.0/2.5 on 4lt v8 range rover and that was more than sufficient (and was single).

A pair of 2.5's should be more than enough, I assume they'll be crossed over at some point (I remember some of Ed's theories validating a preference for it). Running cats?

Well that means 2.25" a side for a 5.2L V8 so going by that 2" a side for a 4L v8 should be ok. I have a couple of books around and all seem to suggest that it should be around right for a non race v8 of that size. Will be running cats and a custom X pipe to two mufflers and if its too loud I will worry about it then haha.

A pic of the underside before/after would be good.

Ed seems to think the sorer/supra share floor pans so where it all runs would be interesting.

For reference

To be honest the front sub frame looks VERY similar to the soarer front subframe. It looks almost identical right up to the diff but the soarer is a longer car so not sure if the length is made up in the nose or the cabin is also longer. The rear sub frame looks completely different though I have read post of people saying they think they sub frames are interchangable between the cars (not sure if they meant the earlier supra and soarer as they shared a lot or including the new series JZA80 and JZZ/UZZ soarer).

One thing for sure the soarer doesn't have the fuel tank hanging from the rear like the supra, its behind the back seats with a little removable wall in the boot dividing it from the boot. I guess this was to accommodate the dual exhaust or possibly some requirement in the u.s. as the car was developed for them.

Front subframes are the same and rear subframes are similar and both interchange between the xZZ3x Soarers and the JZA80 Supras.
The JZA80 is ~140mm shorter in it's wheelbase and the difference between the two chassis is between the tailshaft centre bearing and the diff.

Differences

Front brackets were not on the pre-'94 Soarers (need brackets plus crossmember with mounts to retrofit)

Rear brackets never fitted to Soarers? not sure. Would need whole subframe to retrofit

Other than that the subframes are the same
